Uq professor insists journalism degree will continue to'redeem my name'

I am a media student at UNSW who has been offered a journalism degree. However, the offer remains on hold after I made a complaint to UNSW regarding allegations of dishonesty in the contract (see link below).

UNSW declined to comment, but they did confirm that they had not been asked to explain the contract to students.

One student at UNSW wrote about the experience on his blog.

"They are trying to pretend to be concerned about students' well-being, when in fact they are actively attempting to make us less comfortable by deliberately cutting back on our access to material," he wrote.

"So the idea that students should be given something to achieve in life does not make any sense at all. I was concerned for the students but now that I'm in a position to stand up for them, I have become concerned for those who are still stuck with no information about their future.

"But to my mind, they [UNSW] are so concerned over a graduate's well-being that they didn't even look after them.

"In fact, they probably even tried to intimidate me and my family into accepting this contract … We had no idea. I couldn't get any information, and was surprised when I was told that only a couple of staff members had knowledge of this."

The contract is reportedly going to be renewed in December but for whatever reason it is still on hold.

"Unhappy that they still have something to offer us after three years, the faculty have sent a letter to me informing me of their decision to cancel the agreement," the student wrote.

"UNSW's response was to tell me, 'this contract has now expired, you may not renew it any further'."

Another student, who was also unhappy about the contract, took to Facebook to speak up and say: "I am an UNSW student. I do not have the money to continue to study journalism … I really wish students had had the same options."

"The faculty are so angry," the student wrote. "They do not want us to continue to study journalism; they want us to quit and take their jobs. I am not a single parent – if there is a solution, we should accept it."

Brothers jailed over park bashing death have their verdicts reviewed

The jury at the trial of seven men accused of assaulting a 17-year-old female football player at a park in Southport has been informed of sentencing.

Fourteen of the seven men were in court in Sydney and three were in Adelaide with their families. The other seven men were jailed at Brisbane's Macquarie Courthouse.

The five accused of assault have been in court in Brisbane for sentencing on Monday.

A 12-month trial heard how one of the youths punched another and hit her multiple times.

The young female victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told police she was knocked unconscious at the park at Westy St and Tait St in July 2013 and woke up in a hospital after the attack.

Police allege the male victim also punched another boy, who fell to the ground.

Inspector Ben Gudbranson said the victim suffered head injuries as a result of what he called a "wrestler punch".

The three men in court have been charged with conspiracy, causing grievous bodily harm with intent and criminal damage by means of a weapon.

The judge who sentenced the accused of causing grievous bodily harm said the victim suffered a broken nose as a result of the blows.

Police believe the five men will face an additional charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to a person less than 16.

"The five defendants had clearly intended to cause the injuries," the judge told the court.

"They had the weapon readily available and had acted with reckless disregard for the life and health of the victim."

Police allege the five men were driving a silver Mercedes which was in the process of being towed away by the Crown from Westy St when they were driving around Tait St about 7.30am on July 1, 2013, after witnessing a group of three men chasing a woman down a wooded section of the park.

The trial saw the five men charged face an additional charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The court also heard how the victim was forced to watch her father and older brother suffer serious head injuries after the accused beat them with a piece of metal.

In her victim impact statement, the victim claimed the assault left her "disgusted, angry and hurt and now suffering from the effects of months of physical and psychological stress".

The judge who sentenced the five men has been told to consider his sentence after sentencing of the five young men.

The accused will have a minimum fine of $5000 for all but on
