Conservative MP criticises Prime Minister's election timing as 'disastrous, wrong and dangerous'
Former Conservative MP Robert Carter who quit after losing election to Labour said: 'In modern times, it is just unacceptable. Not only does our political system not work like it used to - I have just returned from a campaign in Scotland - but it is not only wrong, but I think dangerous.'
He added that the public are fed up with the status quo and that 'the politicians who have to live with it don't have to be in power.
'What do you do?'
He concluded: 'We cannot continue to live like we did for 200 years. We can't go on like we did then.'
Conservative MP Robert Carter says that 'It is not the times to be doing this'
Former Conservative MP Robert Carter, who resigned from Parliament last month due to being in line to be appointed as a ministerial adviser, claimed the upcoming general election will 'turn this country back to the 1950s'
'We're going to lose our freedoms and our liberties but it's the only way to do it. We cannot continue to live like we did for 200 years and, if I am right, it will turn this country back to the 1950s,' he said on his Twitter account.
While some may see any election as a matter of choice, Carter believes that it is the 'only way to see whether things go to hell or not.
He tweeted: 'As an individual, it's one thing to do the job, but as a country you have to say the end times.'
His comments come just a week after the Government warned that Britain should be preparing for a 'dangerous scenario' in the event of a Brexit.
Prime Minister David Cameron has repeatedly defended the decision to leave the EU - but is no longer the person to put forward his case to the public.
In a televised interview last week, the PM also said voters'shouldn't be worried about the future' as he said that Theresa May had 'given us a very clear vision.
'There is no one that I am certain of, as we start out on a journey, would go back on the same policy if I stood in the doorway of Number 10, so I think this election and the question of future will not define us.
'We will come into this campaign and go in a different direction than our opponents. But we have a big task. We have to find a way forward for the UK.'
