Govt commits 1 million to fishing infrastructure projects in South Asia
KOTA KANGARADAH: The Government of Malaysia has committed 1 million Malaysian ringgit ($10,000) to the National Fish Hatchery System in Thailand to create a new industry that would bring a steady flow of fish into the national market.
The fund is being utilised for construction of fish hatcheries, new technology and marketing to expand fishing capacity in Southeast Asia's largest seafood exporter.
Malaysian ringgit is a good currency, with around RM50.000 per USD in 2014. This is equivalent to around 60% of South Asia's current current international exchange rate.
The Government will also contribute 100,000 ringgit in 2015 to the National Fertilizers Agency (NFAA) fund to help local farmers and provide a long term support to the farming sector in Thailand.
Malaysia has also offered its largest-ever fish-fishing permit (FFP) programme, providing a maximum catch of 600,000 wild Atlantic cod (Dermochelys coriacea) off Sulawesi, which was in the FFP for 18 months.
The Prime Minister said fish hatchery investment is vital to the future growth of the nation.
