Nsw volunteers firefighter dies in truck rollover near albury

In a statement issued shortly after 2pm (AEST), firefighters from the Nsw Disaster Response Unit confirmed that a volunteer firefighter, Michael Dreyfus, has died in the morning as a result of an accident between an ATV and a large number of vehicles near the albury beach.

"Two men were taken to nearby hospitals as a result of the incident, while another man was seriously injured in a crash with two vehicles that came too close to him," the statement said.

"The injured man will be in a stable condition for a number of days."

Nsw police have released the following statement:

"At 1:20am on November 26 it has been determined a volunteer fireman suffered life threatening injuries while on duty. He is being cared for in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

"All Nsw community members will be directed to ensure safety and minimise disruption to the public at this time."

Mr Dreyfus was a 29-year-old man from the west coast of Western Australia who worked as a part-time community outreach officer with the Nsw Police Department, the statement said.

The ATV was driving out of the Albury Beach area at around 1.10am when it came into contact with several other vehicles, and rolled over, Mr Dreyfus said.

"The ATV was travelling northbound on the beach but was driven off the beach to the east by a number of vehicles that were moving to the south of the road as the ATV came into contact with a number of other vehicles," Mr Dreyfus said.

"At some stage the ATV fell over, caused extensive damage, and ran over a woman who was standing on the beach with her dog."

The woman suffered life-threatening injuries, paramedics and the ATV crew were able to save her life, the statement said.

Minister accused of incompetence following nursing crisis

It is understood the health minister and his deputy were left with their heads buried in their hands after the devastating disaster at Wirral Royal Infirmary.

A senior source told the Evening Standard it had left ministers so shaken that they were unable to look after patients in their care for long.

"The patient care staff were not prepared," the source said.

They added that there had been the "most terrifying" response by hospital staff in years with "no one in the room with them".

A nurse from the hospital confirmed that the building had been cordoned off following the evacuation as well as the police presence.

A senior NHS England source told the Sunday Times: "One hospital had a large number of staff, including nurses and paramedics, and an emergency was declared across that ward.

"But when it came to a full evacuation, the building was cordoned off and the police were in there with fire trucks.

"The patient care staff were not prepared. The staff had to be moved out, along with the emergency ambulance. It had to be moved."

This latest incident comes after news emerged that the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has been accused of ignoring the need for extra staff at a nursing home for his own security.

Mr Hunt was given powers to direct an extra 1,000 staff into the NHS for the night-time after it was revealed the nursing home has been forced to close as its patients were evacuated.

There is also mounting concern at the health service over the lack of beds for more than a third of patients after their treatment at the Royal Infirmary of Western and Central London NHS Foundation Trust was suspended for up to three days without reason.

There have been calls for Mr Hunt's government to consider taking a bigger role in providing mental health care for patients in hospitals.

The Health Secretary has promised a review into the use of psychiatric drugs - but has denied any role in stopping treatment for their ill-treatment.
