Japans leading newspaper vows to track down 'unlawful killing','savage crime'
(RNS) The newspaper of the New Agers, the nation's most-hated and least-seemingly enlightened branch of the New York megachurch, the World Service, said on Tuesday (May 10) it would stop publishing a special edition because of claims that Jews killed more than 800 people for more than two centuries.
In a special report published Sunday (May 9), the tabloid noted that while World Service leader and executive director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Ari Chobanian, denied any such claims, former New Mexico state senator John O'Neill, chairman of the New Mexico State Commission of Investigation, said that the paper had published an "incredibly troubling" story.
Chobanian's testimony — which he says he will publish in the special edition of the New York Times, The Journal News and other publications — sparked an outpouring of criticism from prominent and not-so-famous rabbis, historians and New York Times critics, many of whom called on the paper to apologize and publish the report publicly.
"[Chobanian] is the last person I would send to the grave," Rabbi Eliahu Chachman of the Congregation Beth El in Jerusalem said in a statement. "He is a despicable anti-Semite who knows exactly how to destroy minds at a critical time."
In a statement Tuesday, Rabbi John Ussher of the Congregation Hillel in New York called Chobanian's allegations "absolutely false" and said he had never seen a video of the incident that Chobanian had cited. Ussher also said he had met with O'Neill, who asked the publication's managing editor to immediately retract "an outrageous and false attack" and to apologize to Chobanian.
O'Neill's statement read in part: "The World Service is committed to maintaining the highest level of journalistic standards. A recent article, allegedly based on a video, made it impossible to evaluate the evidence and it's difficult to believe that O'Neill believes it is an accurate account of the time period covered."
O'Neill made his comments on Twitter under the account @RabbiChobanian.

But while she worries the lane's closure might have a devastating effect on the city's business and tourism infrastructure, she hopes the new resolution, which she says she supports and which the city is in the process of adopting, will help calm public tensions.
"A resolution will at least get these guys [the traffic committee and park board] out there and ask for their thoughts."
According to Schumacher, the committee recently passed a motion that recommended closing the path as soon as possible. The motion has been referred to the City Council's Transportation Committee, where it is expected to be discussed again next month.

A new study in the Lancet Psychiatry has concluded that the number of young people who commit suicide each day rises by around two per cent every day, after accounting for differences in exposure to other causes, lifestyle and risk factors.
The researchers report that a sharp increase in suicides since 2010, when more people were aged 20 to 24 and reporting increasing levels of depression and anxiety, suggests there may be a pressing need to tackle rising suicide rates.
The paper examined data from the first five years of the NHS National suicide database, using all persons aged 25 and over (up to a maximum of age 45). It uses a national population breakdown of suicide, to ensure comparisons can be made with the suicide rate of older people, based on suicide rates in that age range in England and Wales.
The researchers found, on average, that suicide by young people increased by 15 per cent each year after 10 years of age. They also found that the numbers of suicides by young adults doubled from 10 to 19.1 per cent per year after that, a rate of rise that is likely to be exacerbated by mental health concerns on an individual basis.
This rate of growth, the authors write, is similar to that seen in Australia.
The authors conclude that a combination of increased mental health and education is the key to preventing young people from turning to suicide.
"While the underlying causes are unclear, research is currently underway to develop effective strategies to reduce the numbers of young people ending their lives prematurely," says Prof Peter Clarke of the University of Exeter's Center for Psychiatric Health and Wellbeing. "This report is yet another step in supporting this direction."
Dr Peter Harnden, a psychiatrist with the Samaritans in London, says that one reason for the "unprecedented increase in young people having attempted suicide in the last decade is the lack of attention paid to this potentially serious issue among the public. One major reason could be that young people are misinformed about the risks that can come from taking drugs and alcohol and the many additional potential consequences they could face if they use them or their friends are exposed to them," he says.
He adds: "It will be important, however, to keep the spotlight on issues such as suicide which are already high-profile.
"The research clearly shows that for a young person to go to suicide, there needs to be action on their personal health, which means treating them effectively, supporting them in recovery and taking them off drugs and alcohol."

The former St Mirren man revealed on Sky Sports Scotland Sport that Scottish clubs were willing to take advantage of their existing promotion and relegation structure for lucrative deals.
"The first-ever promotion or relegation was given on the advice of the SPL and it is not something they would do in our situation because we are not yet the first English-based club who is in an English league.
"But then, if it's not enough to sell an existing club and you start from scratch, I see no reason why you shouldn't do it here because you are so close to your destination."
In 2012, the then-Scottish FA's Director of Football, Mark Richardson, said: "I think the problem we had is how, for us, we could have done a deal to get a club to Glasgow without having the club playing in the Scottish Premier League (soccer).
"But the situation in England is far worse - we have a situation where, as you see England, clubs want a club in the Premier League who are going to move in to the clubs who have not made the Premier League, for them [a promotion to the top flight].
"When it comes to the bottom clubs, some clubs will do exactly what they say.

That's in addition to hundreds of thousands of dollars in individual donations.
By contrast, the Greens in British Columbia are doing relatively well. They've spent less than $4.3 million on campaigns, less than 10 per cent of the $12.5 million total they've spent in British Columbia this election cycle. And to a degree, they seem to be building more momentum.
Still, the number is much higher than it would be if it were just a few years ago.
And if you put $2 million into a B.C. election, well, you can probably guarantee that when that candidate appears on the ballot at a later date, their campaign will be much more effective than they were a year ago.
With a Greens victory, the Greens could be the only third-party choice in B.C. in five years, which will help bring this political conflict to the fore and let people decide which party they really want to be a part of the future.
So maybe we should stop throwing stones at these blobs and look at a different direction.

A flight recorder was recovered during an operation at a helicopter crash site in north Queensland early this month after being recovered from a drone.
The recovery operation began at 8.20am on Sunday, February 5, 2014 when a search helicopter operating at 535 metres reported some aircraft and ground equipment appeared to have been damaged in the crash, police said.
About 11am that day a mobile crane was employed to remove the drone and helicopter.
On Monday a search warrant was executed for the drone on the site at Pimlico Bay, near the site of the helicopter crash.
Detective Superintendent Rob Williams, who is leading the operation to recover the drone, said on Thursday that the drone had been in the care of a former Australian army member for three months.
The drone appeared to have been brought to the site in 2014 by a drone operator who, the report said, had no connection to Australia Defence Force personnel or the defence industry.
Mr Williams said the drone carried a "satellite tracking system and telemetry", suggesting it was "in flight" on a commercial service.
The recovery operation is being funded by Defence and the Federal Government.
